The Bishop's School Prayer

While I would love to say that going to Chapel was one of my fondest memories of Bishop's, that would be a lie.  It wasn't particularly fun.  However, as I have grown older (and hopefully wiser, but the jury is still out on that one) and I have grown in my Walk with Christ, I have looked back on our times in Chapel with increasing fondness.  To that end, it seemed fitting that we bring back a good memory from our days in Chapel - The School Prayer.

The Bishop's School Prayer

Bless, O Heavenly Father, this school.
Make us ready to be taugh and willing to obey.
Enrich us with faithfulness and loving wisdom.
Quicken our minds in the desire for knowledge and our hearts in the love of virtue.
Deliver us from fear of that which is new and scorn of that which is old.
Strengthen us in body and spirit that we may be prepared for service to our country and the world.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

A BIG thanks to Jocie for digging this up from her archives!

Where Are They Now: Tyler Kandel, '03 - Interview

Hopefully you had a chance to see Tyler Kandel's outstanding video tribute to Bishop's Water Polo program posted here at BishopsAlumni.com a few weeks ago.  Tyler and I finally had a chance to catch up and here is what he had to say.

Graduated: 2003

Siblings:
Jasmyn Kandel 98' now Jasmyn Tanner 98'
Bryan Kandel 00'
Sean Kandel 02'

University of California, Los Angeles 2008' B.A. History/Art History

Art Center College of Design, Candidate for 2011' B.F.A. Photography and Imaging

Current City: Pasadena
Occupation: Student

What do you value most?
The people. I went to college and realized that not everyone is as close to their high school friends as I am. I never realized that these types of relationships are unique and special.

What would you like to forget?
I really disliked English class...things get so emotional in English class.

What are you favorite memories?
My favorite memories have to be the times I played water polo. Friday morning water polo is a memory I still think about today. I loved competing against my teammates and classmates. There really is no better way to start the weekend.

Were there any teacher/coaches who inspired?
I still maintain relationships with both Jim Fales and Doug Peabody. They have taught me so much about being an athlete and being a man. They treat me like family; there is not much more you can ask for. Also Mrs. Triana, she was always one of my favorite teachers.

What activities did you participate in?
Mainly athletics. I didn't really spend that much time doing anything else.

Do you still keep in touch with classmates?
Yes of course. Most of my closest friends are from Bishop's. My graduating class is still really close.

What led you to your college or graduate school?
After UCLA, my parents bought me a camera as a graduation gift. I had always loved creating art and never really discovered my love for photography until then. I stepped one foot on to the Art Center College of Design's campus and knew that it was the place that I wanted to be.

What led you to your particular field of study?
Art has always been an interest of mine. While working as an Architectural intern, I spent more hours scanning press images than I would like to say. Looking at pictures all day long enhanced my appreciation for photography and ultimately pushed me toward that medium.

What was it like to transition from Bishops to college and then into the real world?
I believe Bishop's prepares students academically for college. However, there are a lot of things going on in the "real world" that are not going on at Bishop's. You can't leave your backpack on the ground in the "real world."

Do you feel Bishops prepared you for your experience in school, work and life?
Absolutely. I believe Bishop's does a great job with teaching students to think critically. I feel that has prepared me for almost any situation.

Tell us a bit about your work/company?
Trying to become a photographer is definitely a difficult task these days. Now, everyone has a camera and almost everyone participates in some form of photography. It's a different economic climate for photographers today and it has become increasingly more difficult to become successful in this field. With that being said, I absolutely love what I do and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I am excited to show a new portrait series I have been working on, with the launch of my new website. Check BishopsAlumni.com in the next month or so - they will be posted here.

How do you spend your time outside of work?
Art Center is pretty demanding. When I'm not at school, I spend my time trying to finish my work from school, promote my work (oh yeah, did I say go to www.facebook.com/thekandelstudio), back-up my work, get the work ready for exhibition, make more work and create a portfolio of the new work because the old work is old. It's pretty much a constant cycle, and then maybe some travel and of course eating amazing food (but that just means calling my mom and seeing if I can come over for dinner).

The Bishop's School Alumni Association Hosts Third Annual Tailgate on the Terrace

                                            Photos by Brittany Comunale, '12

It was another action-packed tailgate party at Bishop's on Friday evening, January 14, when alumni and their families gathered for the third year in a row for Tailgate on the Terrace.  Hosted by the Bishop's Alumni Association and chaired by Lynne Mathison, '87 and Melisaa Alioto Murfey, '97, the evening started off in the EBS Drawing room with drinks, dinner, lots of conversation and activities for the kids before moving on the gym to watch the girl's and boy's basketball teams take on rival Francis Parker.  The Girls' varsity team won 73-37 while the boy's had a nailbitting game that they lost in the last few minutes, a close 49-52.  At halftime, children of alumni had a shooting contest which was won by Suzie Carlson, daughter of Don Carlson,'80.  It was a really fun evening.  If you didn't make it this year then make sure you tailgate with us next year!!
