Auction was a huge success this year, with the 80's band FOREIGNER performing a spectacular private concert. This year's spectacular auction was chaired by Maureen Gibbons, Donna Walker and Patty Brutten. Amongst the rock and roll glitz and intense bidding, though, was a deeper purpose - providing support for the scholarship programs which give incredibly gifted students the chance at a Bishop's education.
Alex Afsahi '06 is proof of the possibilities that a Bishop's scholarship can provide. Alex spoke at the Auction about how the money donated for his high school scholarship drastically changed the trajectory of his life. Growing up in Oceanside, of Iranian immigrant heritage, Alex talked of the handfuls of former neighborhood classmates who had either died or been incarcerated by the time he was graduating from Bishop's.
Alex spoke highly of his teachers at Bishop's and of his opportunity for a full scholarship to Yale University. Since his graduation from Yale in 2009, Alex has been teaching 8th and 9th grade math and English at Fezeka High School in Gugulethu, a black township outside of Cape Town.
Alex is a vivid reminder of the power of a Bishop's educational and social experience - and the power each of our dollars has to do incredible good. Kudos to all that donated at the "Say You Will" Auction on April 16th!
